Chiropractic treatment doesn't appear to be a recommended option for Chiari I, even a chiropractor suggested not going to a REGULAR chiropractor. He said there are Chiropractic neurologist who have 3 additional years of treatment. Please share your thoughts with me about this, especially if you have tried that option. I'm going to the regular neurologist this Monday (6/18). My family physician already called my last Monday with a Chiari I malformation. My symptoms seem to be getting progressively worse. The thought of surgery doesn't thrill me but the results seem to be relatively successful and at this point I think this feeling in my head is going to drive me insane! I don't know if I want to mess around with a chiropractic neurologist if there's just a chance it will work. thanks! Rhonda

The following is a list of the Chiari symptoms I deal with on a daily basis.

Head

* Severe Headache daily at the 7-8 level on the pain scale. The pain is like a vice on the back of your head.
* Pressure at the base of skull, down my neck and in my head.
* Shooting pain in my head like a hammer hitting my head. This happens mostly at the base of my skull and triggers really bad pressure in my head.

Eyes

* Blurred vision in my right eye most of the time.
* Double vision in both eyes. When this happens my vision is either blurry or I have “cut” vision where what I am looking at is clear except for whats in the middle and it's like someone cut a piece of the picture out and moved it out of place. Either higher or lower than the rest of what I am seeing.
* Involuntary eye movement, sensitive to bright light and I have light spots in my eyes.
* My pupils are unequal at times. My left pupil will react to light but my right pupil does not.

Neck

* Muscle spasms from the base of my skull down my neck, around my throat and into my shoulder area.
* Swelled feeling in my throat, hard to breath and swallow.
* Pain in my throat like the top of my spine is going to stick through my throat making it hard to swallow or speak.
* Hoarse Voice which almost gone if I talk much at all.
* Tight band or choking feeling in my throat and I feel like a bone is pushing into my throat

Back

* Shooting shock pain like milliions of needles down my back.
* Severe mid and lower back pain which comes on like someone hits me with a sledge hammer.
* Muscle spasms.

Ears

* Ringing in ears.
* Hearing loss.

Body

* Tingling in arms, hands, legs and feet.
* Balance problems walking like the floor is lifting up. My legs feel like they weight 100 pounds each if I try to walk through a store.
* Decreased sensation in arms, legs, hands, feet
* Bottoms of my feet and palms of my hands are numb

Most of my symptoms seem to effect my right side more than my left. I have tremors on my right side to the point I cannot hold a glass with just one hand.

Memory is an issue now with things that are just said to me. I find that I need to write things down to remember them.

Breathing has become a problem. My right lung fills with fluid and if I am lucky enough to fall asleep I wake up because I am not breathing.

Insominia is an issue because of the pain I cannot fall asleep. If I do fall asleep I wake up due to the pain or breathing issues.

I find that I struggle to find the right words like my brain has a fried motherboard and cannot compute.

Hi all, I am prism- and that's a story in itself...")

as to symptoms, you know, the list is so unbelievably long and I used to write it all down as detailed as possible, but no one really wanted to hear it. The doctors would tell me I had fibro.
(oh brother)
or it was all psychosomatic- Anyway, i have pretty much all of what Istruman listed and more-

I have a couple of chiros- one I appreciate- he has a High End cold laser unit which really does make a difference with the pain.
I know it helps because without it I am
COMPelled to stretch my
--n-e-ck--
a Very bad thing to do with EDS & Chiari or Cervical Cranial Instability- one of which is one of my problems (going to TCI in Aug)

So, you can take that for what it's worth- but bear in mind that there are cheap ones out there too, that probably don't work as well. Anyway, they are totally inevasive.

The other chiro wanted me to spend 40-80 hours in a hyperbaric chamber, which i did. it didn't help.

Either the chamber or swimming too strenuously... made my symptoms flare up - I started falling again unexpectedly, having some 'seizures' or cereberal fits, having major contorted limb problems when I tire and tiring very easily ... vomiting and oh, everything just got bad again.

Both of these chiros claimed to have treated people with Chiari- but I don't really trust them at all. (just for the cold laser)

Personally, I think it was probably the exercise and not the hyperbaric chamber that caused my decline- because Dr. B. said the chamber should be ok-
but I have to admit I did feel like I was passing out in there.

It's just all very confusing. How the symptoms come and go. Things have leveled out some in the last week. I've become more careful, using my collar more, I've become more moderate, just doing water aerobics for instance. And it's ok...for now.

Overall, my symptoms seem to be most affected by my activity level. Which makes me sad. Very sad. Right now my family is leaving for a high mountain lake that we own- at 8,000ft. above sea level- gianormous trees and then, -----no trees--- just rocks and sky--- the clearest lake- icy dark blue-- reflecting with perfect serenity-
-the horizon full of possibilities-

I didn't go because it's like at least an hour's worth of we're talkin' VERY rocky four-wheelin'.

So, I'm here instead~ gonna go sunbathe, hose in hand for a few.
